Language Students Encouraged to Discover their ‘Why’ and Unlock their Potentials

A Town and Gown seminar was recently held at the Department of Languages and General Studies, which featured a life changing and impactful presentation with the theme, ‘Languages, Vision and The Prospects of Greatness in the 21st Century,’ by Mr. Tunji Abioye, an Advertising/ Marketing Communication expert from Fuel Communications Limited, Lagos. In his presentation, the students were advised to disabuse their minds of the notion that fellows who study courses in the Arts are inferior to the ones in the Sciences.
He stressed that the most important thing in life is self-discovery which would lead to the discovery of one’s innate abilities and talents. “That,’ he emphasised, “is mostly the determining factor of how far a man goes in life and not just his course of study or even level of education.” He pointed out that every man was born with potentials for greatness, but everyone is responsible for developing that potential into reality by putting in exceptional hard work. “The path to greatness,” he said, “is exceptional and high quality work, and only few men find it. Academic qualifications do not guarantee greatness, if it did, Aliko Dangote and Cosmas Maduka, would not have attained it, because, both had no formal education.”
Mr. Abioye, who is also the Chief Executive Officer, Fuel Communications Limited, encouraged the students to strive to discover their purpose and pursue it with all their might, and nothing would stop them from manifesting greatness. He stated that greatness is the quality of being distinguished or eminent, and gave examples of Nigerians from Arts background who have achieved greatness. Some of them include, Dele Momodu, Journalist/CEO, Ovation International and Ex-Presidential Candidate, who studied Yoruba Language; and Chioma Omeruah (aka Chi Gurl), who dropped out of the University in Nigeria; failed woefully in Criminal Justice; and later studied French Education.
Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Head of Department, Languages and General Studies, Dr. Tuesday Owoeye, appreciated the Guest Speaker and members of the department for their efforts. He also thanked the Management for their insight and drive towards creating a continuous platform, for the development of the value of Covenant University students in the labour market, both as employees and employers of labour.
Present at the event were members of the Department of Languages, as well as members of the College of Development Studies.
