Summary of Profile
Emeka Iweala is a Professor of Biochemistry and a past head of department of Biological Sciences at the Covenant University, Nigeria. He currently serves as the Director, Covenant University Centre for Research, Innovation and Discovery (CUCRID) and deputy director, Covenant Applied Informatics and Communication African Centre of Excellence (CApIC-ACE). He worked as a faculty at the department of Biochemistry, Abia State University, Nigeria between 1996 and 2009 where he started his academic and research career. His research interests cover a broad range of biomedical areas in Chemoprevention, Cancer biology, Antioxidants, Diet, Drugs, Plant foods, Medicinal plants, Molecular biology and Public health. He has the ability to organize, integrate, develop and direct different research projects. He has supervised over 100 students' research projects and established active research collaborations with other researchers in Africa, China and the USA. He has published several papers from research spanning nutritional and pharmacological biochemistry and presented papers at several local and International scientific meetings. His current research focuses on the role of Nigerian plant foods in chemo-prevention of diseases and public health nutrition. He is also interested in molecular and biochemical characterization of prostate cancer and other cancers in Nigeria. He is the head of the Non-communicable diseases sub-cluster of Covenant University Public Health and Wellbeing Research Cluster (CUPHWERC) and the PI of CaPTC_Covenant University, a research affiliate of the NCI-EGRP Prostate Cancer Transatlantic Consortium (CaPTC) involved in prostate cancer research. He has been involved in the preparation of several grant proposals and successfully coordinated the team that wrote and won the grant application for the World Bank-funded Covenant Applied Informatics and Communication African Centre of Excellence (CApIC-ACE). He is a member of several National and International professional bodies including Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB), Nigerian Society for Experimental Biology (NISEB), Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST), Biochemical Society, London, African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and European Association for Cancer Research (EACR). He was a recipient of the 2012 CAS-TWAS Visiting Scholar Fellowship tenable at the Kunming Institute of Botany, China. He has active international research collaborations with the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health and University of Florida, USA. He serves on the editorial boards of several academic Publications and journals. He is married and has children.
