Questions that are germane to Psychology students’ future career path and growth as well as importance in the society received professional answers at a recent departmental Town and Gown seminar organized by the Department of Psychology, Covenant University.

The guest speaker, a Certified Clinical Psychotherapist and General Psychotherapeutic, Teiva Ventures, Lekki, Dr. Joy Ogbonna, in her presentation titled, “Career World for a Psychology Graduate”, defined career as what revolves round a particular individual. She also emphasised to the audience the importance of psychology in a community as it deals with service to humanity.

“In order to impact the community which is what Psychology is all about, you need to get every necessary skill that will enable you to see your goal come true. Such skills include, critical thinking, effective writing, reading, one-on-one/good communication skills, be able to understand human behavior and be a problem solver” she shared.

Furthermore, Dr. Ogbonna encouraged the students to be proactive and not reactive towards the happenings in a community. “To remain relevant in today’s world, there is need for you to think outside the box, think of something extra-ordinary you can do and let your work take you to where your legs can’t get you,” she said.

Earlier in his remarks, The Dean, College of Leadership Development Studies, Professor Charles Ogbulogo, said that there is a great deal of emphasis on management but little on leadership, which has been one of the crisis the country is facing presently. He therefore, urged the students to lead in any human endeavour they find themselves through personal development.

The Head, Department of Psychology, Dr. Olujide Adekeye, stated that the main reason for the programme was Covenant University’s commitment to raising future leaders that would make an impression in the industry after graduation.
