Huawei Assures CU on Virtual Desk Infrastructure

A leading global Information Communication Technology (ICT) provider, Huawei, has assured the Management of Covenant University (CU) on a cost-effective enterprise virtual desktop cloud infrastructure in the transformation of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) facilities of the university.
Solution Manager, Huawei, Mr. Oluwaseyi Obiyemi, gave this assurance on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 during a presentation titled, ‘Virtual Desk Infrastructure: Fusion of Desktop Solution’, at a meeting between his company’s representatives and the CU Management.
Huawei is currently exploring the feasibility of partnering on building a Smart CU towards the actualisation of the university’s Vision 10:2022.
Obiyemi told the CU team led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor AAA. Atayero, that with the management of personal computer plagued by challenges such as data security vulnerability, High O and M costs and resource inflexibility, desktop virtualization offers a stepping stone to ICT transformation.
“This is the future. Part of the benefits is that the date is secure, you can work anywhere in the world even though your desktop is at CU, there is simplified management and rapid fault recovery,” said Obiyemi.
Huawei FusionCloud Desktop solution architecture, he explained, offers end-to-end solutions which optimizes and consolidates resources to ensure comprehensive performance and user experience. There are rich options of Access Terminals and it supports multiple operation systems, he added.
Obiyemi disclosed that Desktop Cloud’s typical application scenarios include conventional office, secure office, cloud workstations; call Centres, public terminals and branch offices. Huawei, he stated, had installed the virtual desktop infrastructure for organisations like Hong Kong Airlines, Shenzhen Stock Exchange, the Bank of China and the African Union with huge success. “We are more than happy to help Covenant University leverage this futuristic technology,” he enthused.
The other presentation made at the meeting was a prototype of the proposed Covenant University Technology Hub. Highlighting the features of the facility, Architect Gbenga Alalade described it as peculiar and core to the operations of CU. The twin building linked by a bridge will have over 2000 computers across different halls, which are collapsible to maximize space when necessary. It also features an amphitheater where students and faculty can collaborate; call Centres and a basic reception.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor AAA. Atayero, gave thumbs up to Alalade for the work done so far on the CU Tech Hub design and suggested that for each new structure coming up in the university, renewable energy should be considered as source of lighting
He said that the CU Tech Hub offers Huawei the opportunity of providing IVS to make the building very smart, a suggestion the Huawei team said would be considered.
Also on hand to witness the presentations were the Registrar, Pastor Olamide Olusegun; Director, Financial Services, Pastor Bayo Oladehinbo; Director, Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Dr. David Omole; Head, Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, Dr. Victor Matthews and other key officers.
