English
Since the English Language plays a multiplicity of roles in Nigeria, a good grounding in it is essential for anyone who has gone through a degree programme in a Department of English, especially at the University level. It is for this reason that our students in this Department are exposed to every aspect of the study of the English Language and Literature at the phonological, morphological, lexical and syntactic levels.
The programme in English Language and Literary Studies is intended to produce very high caliber personnel in all aspects of English language and literature. This is in consonance with the vision of Covenant University with regard to raising a new generation of leaders in Nigeria and beyond. It is expected that products of the programme will satisfy the needs for placement in the academia, the mass media, the corporate world and indeed all other fields where a high degree of proficiency in English language is demanded. The programme has two components. A student can specialize in either the language option or the literature alternative as earlier stated. In each of the options, there is a combination of theoretical issues and practical applications. The programme is developmental in nature.
The French language has, since the 18th century, the Age of Enlightenment, been considered a language of diplomacy and international relations. The ability to use the language has consequently come to be regarded as a hallmark of the well-educated man. Indeed, French is one of the two most extensively used languages in the world, a language of the humanities, of science and technology also. The B.A. (Honours) degree programme in French studies will help to produce a crop of Nigerians and other Africans not only capable of building the much needed bridges between Anglophone and Francophone countries of West Africa (and Africa as a whole), more specifically of filling our nation’s communicative needs in such organizations as the OAU, AU, ECA, ECOWAS, UN, etc. but also of undertaking meaningful academic research over time, in diverse areas of French studies and thus putting Nigeria on the international map of French studies.
